How to unclogging a drain

If your kitchen sink becomes clogged, first check to make sure your other drains are open and working. Check the sink stopper for large accumulations of hair, and other foreign material. If the stopper in your sink is rubber, than the stoppage is probably on the grate in the drain, just below the stopper.

Mechanical stoppers can often be pulled out by hand, while others need to be turned and lifted out. Some stoppers will require you to disassemble the unit. After you have removed the stopper, take care and clean out all of the hair, soap, or other material.

If you can not remove the stopper, you need to remove the trap from below the sink. Remove as much of the pipe leading up to the basin of the sink as you can. You can use a bent coat hanger or other piece of thin metal with a hook on one end to reach up into the drain to remove the clog. When you remove the piping, make sure you place a bucket under the trap to catch any water that has accumulated.

Any homeowner should have a plumber’s pipe “snake” in their arsenal. The hook of the snake will usually catch on the object that is blocking the drain. Once you feel the snake catch on the obstruction, pull it back out of the drain slowly. Do not try and push it through.
