How to clean stainless sinks These sinks are fairly versatile and resistant to damage, making them a popular choice for sink construction. The use of a plastic or perforated rubber mat will reduce scratching and marks resulting from contact with pots, pans and cutlery. To clean a stainless steel sink, a solution of liquid dishwashing detergent and water or baking soda and water is recommended. After thoroughly rinsing, use a soft cloth or paper towel to dry and polish. Steel wool and scouring powders should never be used with a stainless steel sink as the use of these abrasive materials will result in scratching the stainless steel sink.Stainless steel sinks have an attractive metallic sheen, which can be brightened by gently rubbing the damp sink with a dampened sponge and a small amount of baking soda. Alternatively, polishing using a cloth dipped in vinegar or ammonia can also brighten the sink.
